This may sound ludicrous, but at least video games are helping even the most important of professions. There was a study done with surgeons that played Super Monkey Ball for 20 minutes prior to surgery drills made less mistakes and were more efficient. People in skilled professions used video games to sharpen their skills.
It has been widely known that kids that play video games are also more skilled with hand-eye coordination activities. Well, not if your name is Chad. Sorry, inside joke from college. However, playing video games for an extended period of time can cause epilepsy and extreme laziness. I guess, allowing surgeons to practice their skills on the game of operation is obsolete now.
