5 Tips to Be Your Best at Work

Nowadays, a lot of workplaces are becoming business casual and/or casual. This may be the case, but I feel that sometimes you still need to dress the part. It is a reflection of who you are and where you want to be. And also, I hate it how it is a double standard for guys, when we dress nicely. It’s always, “Oooooh, got an interview?” or even, “What’s the special occassion?”. What? We can’t nicely once in a while? Anyways, here are a few things you can do around the office to be your best at work.

1. Dress the part. Cologne and perfume is ok, but definitely not necessary in the office. Men should keep hair off their face and clean shaven. Women should reconsider wearing ponytails at work, because it may make them seem younger than they really are.

2. Know the art of voicemail. Don’t leave a 5 minute long diatribe about what problems you are having. So, instead, leave a 10 second long brief summary and leave your phone number and repeat it. And most importantly, don’t say, “Hey this is _____, call me back.”

3. Leave out the smiley faces. No brainer.

4. Be personable. No matter what is going on in your life, be personable with everyone around you. It is one of the most important things to be amicable and friendly with your co-workers. It is a reflection of who you are and it just makes the workplace that much nicer to be at.

5. Keep it clean. Keep your desk clean neat and tidy and clutter free. Leave the stuffed animals at home and organize items on your desk to be a controlled mess. You want to look busy, but at the same time, you want to be organized.
