HD-DVD versus DVD Upscaling

I was shopping around Best Buy this weekend and doing some Christmas shopping in the DVD player department. My PS2 just doesn’t cut it anymore while playing DVD’s especially now that I have a Hi-Def television. There is this new feature in a DVD player that will upscale your DVD’s to a certain size.

It will upscale your 480i DVD to 420p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p (depending on what your television can handle. I only realized what an upscaled movie would look like by watching The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers on TNT. They had it in upscaled HD. Here’s a fact, even though upscaling may make your DVD’s look a little nicer, but it is no comparison to Hi-Def. The HD feed you get on TNTHD or Discovery HD theater will probably be the closest you will get to seeing what an HD-DVD may look like.

So, if you have the hankering for a better looking DVD and you have about $250 bucks laying around, get the HDMI cable set and your upscaling DVD player. It will look nice, but beware the release of the HD-DVD players in the coming year. (They already have them, but releasing more affordable ones to the general public in the coming year.)
