A Little Social Commentary

As you may already know, there has been a recent influx of cell phones that play music and run a multitude of applications. Every manufacturer tries to create a piece of technology that attempts to bring all different types of media together. So far, it has failed. You have the PDA’s, cell phones, and even handheld gaming devices that try to emulate what the other is doing. For example, the Nokia NGage attempted to be a handheld gaming platform while trying to emulate a cell phone. And how did it do? BOMBED. As much as I would like everything I want under one roof, so to speak, it’s just not possible….and here’s why.

Motorola has recently released the ROKR itunes cell phone. Now, was it just me or were people just complaining about the battery life on their cell phones when they added the color LCD screen and built-in cameras? Now they want to add MP3 capability to it? That’s absurd. The idea of having your cell phone play music is a great idea but who wants to listen to music while they are walking and drain the battery so much, that if they needed to make an emergency phone call and can’t because of a dead battery? EXACTLY.

I mean who wants to be working out somewhere and have their Treo attached to the hip while listening to music, when they can have an Ipod Nano. Eventually if this convergence of all media comes to fruition and companies begin to partner up, we (the consumer) will be left with no choices, because everyone will somehow be affiliated with each other. The reason why there are different product lines out there is to give the consumers choice. And choice drives the supply and demand of each individual product. So quit makng crappy products and let the products be what they were meant to be!
